Dauphin Island is the slow one on the Alabama coast: a 14-mile barrier island reached by a three-mile bridge, with raised houses along the Gulf-front west end, the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and Fort Gaines on the east end, and a ferry across to Fort Morgan. There are no condo towers, and the public beach and pier sit mid-island. Spring and fall migrations bring birders; summer brings families who want Gulf Shores water without the Gulf Shores traffic.
