Summer pricing on the East Coast ends the Tuesday after Labor Day, when a $700 night can become a $380 night overnight. By October the crowds are gone, but so are some of the restaurants, and the water cools fast the farther north you go. Our booking guide calls the second week of September through Columbus Day the single best window to be on this coast, and flags the second week of October as one of four predictable price-drop weeks each year.
Here are the seven Atlantic destinations we cover, north to south. Every number comes from our own destination pages and guides; where they say little about October, we say less.
Nantucket, Massachusetts
Nantucket runs on a short, intense summer. Peak is July and August, at an average of $1,777 a night, and our best-time guide puts the fall shoulder of September and October as the sweet spot: warm days, thin crowds, and softer rates. The same guide notes the ocean holds summer's heat into September, a polite way of saying October is not swim season. On September 24 our beach tracker read 63 degrees in the water at town, with 25 mph gusts.
That makes October a walking month, and a quiet one. The best waterfront rentals cluster in Madaket and on the Siasconset bluffs; they are limited, premium, and book early.

Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts
The Vineyard is where we have the most specific October numbers. Crowds thin sharply after Labor Day. October brings foliage and early-season rain, and late October carries steep rate drops, often 40 percent below September. Peak averages $1,180 a night; shoulder months see many properties at $600 to $800.
The trade is real. In the off-season many seasonal restaurants, galleries, and shops close, though grocery stores and basic dining stay open. Rehoboth and Bethany, Delaware
The Delaware beaches are busiest from late June through Labor Day. Our best-time guide files October under off-season: mild to cold and cheap, with the tax-free outlets pulling shoppers year-round and the Sea Witch Festival lighting up Rehoboth in late October. If quiet is the whole point, aim for the first three weeks of the month. Bethany is the quieter, more family-oriented of the two towns in any season.
Water is borderline swimmable at the start of the month. Our tracker read 71 degrees off the Rehoboth boardwalk on September 24, with a 65-degree high and 30 mph gusts, a fair preview of an October beach day here. Peak rentals average $194 a night, and October runs below that.

Ocean City, Maryland
Ocean City in early October catches the last warm days before winter, with rates sinking another 20 percent past the September shoulder as schools settle into routine. Our budget guide puts mid-week rates in September and October at 40 to 60 percent below summer, with water in the 60s to low 70s. Peak-season oceanfront condos at the north-end towers average $425 a night.
What closes: as the off-season deepens, roughly 40 percent of seasonal businesses shut, and many beachfront restaurants, arcades, and rental shops close until May. Early October sits before most of that. The sport-fishing fleet, one of the largest on the East Coast, is why our guide calls October and November ideal for charter boats. Book 8 to 10 weeks ahead.

Outer Banks, North Carolina
This is the quietest stretch on the list, and the one that asks the most in return. Crowds vanish by Labor Day, and our best-time guide calls October's first three weeks a surprise: fair weather, empty beaches, and rates around $200 to $250 a night against a $685 summer average. Shoulder pricing drops about 40 percent, and the light is better.
The cautions come from the same guide. In the off-season many rental homes close entirely and restaurants shutter or cut hours to weekends only, so confirm both are open before you book. Hurricane season technically runs through November, though direct hits are rare. Lifeguards are on duty through September, so assume October swimming is unguarded. Our tracker read 76 degrees in the water at Nags Head on September 24, with 10-foot surf and 32 mph gusts the same day.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Myrtle Beach has one of the longest beach seasons on the East Coast: the water is swimmable May through October. Our best-time guide calls the September and October shoulder the local favorite, with the ocean still warm from summer, the beach emptying out, and in-season rates dropping. Its one caveat is to keep an eye on the tropics.
This is the value pick: peak rentals average $196 a night, mostly oceanfront condo and resort units along the sixty-mile Grand Strand. On September 24 our tracker read 81 degrees in the water at the boardwalk, which is why October here is still a beach month rather than a walking month.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Our Hilton Head page says it plainly: October is the sweet spot for weather plus price. The best-time guide puts off-season rates at $300 to $450 a night against a $725 summer average and calls October nearly perfect, with your pick of tee times and noticeably fewer people on the beach. Some restaurants close seasonally, and the water cools through the off-season, though our September spotlight notes it stays warm through October. The tracker read 83 degrees at Coligny Beach on September 24.
It is the least quiet town here in one way: October is peak season for golfers, drawn by firm fairways and shorter restaurant waits, so book tee times 30 to 60 days ahead. The beach is firm enough to bike, and most luxury rentals sit inside Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, and Shipyard.

How to book October
